Penguins Head Coach Surprises Shoppers with Free Groceries

Penguins Head Coach Mike Sullivan surprised shoppers at two Giant Eagle locations with free groceries during the stores dedicated senior shopping hours.

When shoppers reached the checkout line at The Waterfront Giant Eagle and South Hills Market District they were told that all costs were paid in advance by Sullivan.

“We have been so proud to see the generosity of the Pittsburgh community throughout this challenging time,” Sullivan said. “My wife, Kate, and I wanted to do something for those at higher risk for the illness. We know that most seniors live on fixed incomes and have to worry more about getting out in general, so it is our hope that we were able to give them a little relief during a stressful time.”

Pittsburgh Penguins Head Coach Mike Sullivan Surprises Shoppers at Two Giant Eagle Locations with Free Groceries During Senior Hours

Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan surprised shoppers with free groceries this morning at two Giant Eagle locations during designated senior hours.

Local shoppers at The Waterfront Giant Eagle and South Hills Market District were told at the checkout that no payment was necessary and that all costs were paid in advance by Sullivan.

Giant Eagle, a Penguins corporate partner, offers a private shopping hour for seniors aged 60 and older, from 6-7 a.m. on Monday through Wednesday, at participating locations. The Sullivans asked Giant Eagle to target two stores with higher foot traffic during these designated hours.

“We are amazed by the generosity displayed by Mike and Kate Sullivan as they helped provide groceries to some of the most vulnerable members of our community this morning,” said Giant Eagle Spokesperson Jannah Jablonowski. “The Penguins organization continues to be a wonderful partner not only to us at Giant Eagle, but to the entire Pittsburgh community.”
